Study on the Characteristics of a Low Corrosion Peracetic Acid Product Expected by Hospital

Peracetic acid (PAA), also known as peracetic acid, peracetic acid, peracetic acid, was first synthesized in 1902. From the mid-1970s to the 1980 s, it was one of the most widely used chemical sterilizers in China. In the 1990 s, the application of peracetic acid decreased due to the increase in the application of glutaraldehyde, chlorine dioxide and various chlorine-containing disinfectants. In recent years, with the development of new peracetic acid, it has shown a rapid growth trend.

How to choose peracetic acid products? PH size of peracetic acid, peracetic acid concentration on the bactericidal effect of what effect.

1.Effect of PH Value on Peracetic Acid

  • Influence on stability

Peracetic acid decomposition principle: 2CH3COOOH → 2CH3COOH O2 ↑

Synthesis principle of peracetic acid: CH3COOH H2O2 + CH3COOOH H2O

According to the principle of peracetic acid synthesis and decomposition, acetic acid or acetyl-containing compounds (pH≈ 4.0) are beneficial to the stability of peracetic acid. Encounter alkali will accelerate decomposition.

  • Effect on sterilization effect

Peracetic acid sterilization principle-acidic effect: peracetic acid can change the intracellular pH, affect the normal metabolism of bacteria, acid can also directly damage bacteria.

Of course, there is also a view that the bactericidal effect of peracetic acid mainly depends on its own strong oxidation ability, rather than the role of acid, but the consensus is that the acidic environment can greatly enhance the bactericidal effect of the whole system. During the experiment, it was found that the increase of pH value would obviously reduce the bactericidal effect of peracetic acid under the same concentration.

  • Effect of resistance to hard water

Combined with market feedback, hard water resistance is also a factor to be considered in the development of device disinfectants. According to the nature of the main component (CaCO3) in hard water, the substance is easily soluble in acid, and the acidic environment can prevent scale formation or decompose scale in the pipeline.

  • The size of the PH value and the effect of corrosion

Acid and alkaline is a clear chemical concept, PH = 7 is neutral, more than 7 is alkaline, less than 7 is acidic, there are strong acid and alkaline substances are often very corrosive, such as solid NaOH, concentrated sulfuric acid.

Corrosivity is not directly related to pH. pH is only related to hydrogen ion concentration. Of course, high concentration of hydrogen ion or OH-has strong reactivity, thus reflecting strong corrosivity, but it is not the decisive factor. For example, seawater has normal PH value and is close to neutral, but it is highly corrosive. There are many electrolytes in seawater and the ionic strength in solution is relatively large, which can aggravate corrosion.

It can be seen that the setting of PH value should consider a variety of comprehensive factors, such as product stability, sterilization effect, hard water resistance and so on. PH value does not represent the level of corrosion, corrosion should be subject to test data.

2. peracetic acid concentration selection basis
  • According to WS 507-2016 Appendix B, the recommended concentration for disinfection and sterilization of endoscopes is 0.2 to 0.35 percent, so the factory minimum concentration is 0.2 percent. The concentration limit during use is 0.15% and is based on the results of the validation of the lowest concentration used.

No weapon to strike®Peroxyacetic acid disinfectant continuously used 14D stock solution (A + B mixture) had a peroxyacetic acid content of 0.144% (W/V). Under laboratory conditions, up to 210 endoscopes can be decontamination.

  • Concentration detection method during use

The concentration of peracetic acid was checked using the companion Ansett Peracetic Acid Concentration Detection Card.

It can be seen that the concentration of products used for endoscopic disinfection and sterilization is clearly defined in the regulations. In actual use, the test results of the test paper shall prevail.
