Objective To explore the cost of disinfection, turnover rate of fiberoptic bronchoscope, medical income, and the impact on the health of the staff when phthalaldehyde and glutaraldehyde disinfectants are used in the disinfection of fiberoptic bronchoscope, and to provide a basis for the promotion of the use of phthalaldehyde in China. Methods The turnover time of each fiberoptic bronchoscope was calculated, and the monthly maximum disinfection cost, the monthly maximum number of fiberoptic bronchoscopes and the monthly maximum medical income-generating net value of the two disinfectants were calculated based on this time. Twenty staff members who participated in fiberoptic bronchoscope decontamination in the supply room of our hospital distributed questionnaires to analyze the survey results on the impact of using two disinfectants on the body during fiberoptic bronchoscope decontamination. Results Although the cost of disinfection using o-phthalaldehyde is higher than that using glutaraldehyde, the turnover rate of fiberoptic bronchoscope is increased by 50%, and the net value of medical income is increased by 40%. The questionnaire showed that the use of phthalaldehyde disinfection on the staff of the respiratory tract, eye conjunctiva irritation is very slight, and no skin allergies. Conclusion The use of phthalaldehyde for fiberoptic bronchoscopy disinfection, although the cost of disinfection increases, but significantly improve the turnover rate of fiberoptic bronchoscopy and medical income-generating net, and in the long run, reduce the impact of occupational exposure of staff and equipment residues on patients, so phthalaldehyde is worthy of clinical use of efficient disinfectant.
