China's "Portable Blood Glucose Meter Clinical Operation and Quality Management Standard Chinese Expert Consensus" pointed out that 75% ethanol should be used to disinfect the blood collection site when testing blood glucose, and other disinfectants that interfere with the detection, such as iodophor, should not be selected. And should be ethanol volatile, dry before blood. The American Diabetes Association, on the other hand, recommends the use of soap and running water for skin preparation before finger blood sugar testing.
Obviously, the methods recommended by medical administrators in China and the United States for skin preparation before blood glucose measurement are different. This may be due to the different philosophies and external conditions of the two countries. The United States may start from the convenience of patient self-testing, and have a high confidence in patients to wash their hands consciously, and can consciously wash their hands to do skin preparation before measuring blood sugar. However, China may consider that there are many sources of infection in hospitals. 75% ethanol disinfection can reduce the risk of infection and shorten the skin preparation time.
For the effect of 75% ethanol on peripheral blood glucose level, domestic studies have shown that the test results of the two skin preparation methods of 75% ethanol disinfection and flowing water cleaning and drying can be used. However, there are also views that if ethanol is not used for disinfection when measuring blood sugar, it will affect the test results. The "China Diabetes Drug Injection Technical Guidelines (2016 Edition)" recommends in the inspection and disinfection of the injection site: when injecting, keep the injection site clean; When the injection site is not clean or the patient is in an environment where infection is easy to spread (such as a hospital or nursing home), the injection site should be disinfected before injection.
It can be seen that skin disinfection is not necessary when performing blood glucose testing or injection. Considering the long-term clinical practice and public awareness in China, it is recommended to use 75% ethanol to detect peripheral blood glucose after disinfection in medical institutions. When diabetics self-test blood sugar at home, they can also choose to wash their hands with soap and running water, keep their fingers clean and dry, and then take blood.
